Anti-Bullying Information
The Calamus/Wheatland Community School District is dedicated to providing a safe environment for students. Concerns about bullying or harassment are taken seriously and will be dealt with in a timely manner. It is vital that parents and students work together with school staff to help resolve these concerns.

Iowa Anti-Bullying Legislation
Iowa Code 280.28 defines bullying and harassment as the following:
“Harassment” and “bullying” shall mean any electronic, written, verbal, or physical act or conduct toward a student based on the individual’s actual or perceived age, color, creed, national origin, race, religion, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical attributes, physical or mental ability or disability, ancestry, political party preference, political belief, socioeconomic status, or familial status, and which creates an objectively hostile school environment that meets one or more of the following conditions:
Places the student in reasonable fear of harm to the student’s person or property.
Has a substantial detrimental effect on the student’s physical or mental health.
Has the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s academic performance.
Has the effect of substantially interfering with the student’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by a school.
“Trait or characteristic of the student” includes but is not limited to age, color, creed, national origin, race, religion, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical attributes, physical or mental ability or disability, ancestry, political party preference, political belief, socioeconomic status, or familial status. |
Informal Complaint
Parents and students: If you have concerns that you (student) or your child (parent) is being picked on, bullied, or harassed by another student (and the reason is not based on one of a specific “traits or characteristics” listed in the section above), please contact a teacher, counselor, student advocate, or administrator in your child’s building.
Formal Complaint
Parents and students: If you feel the bullying or harassment is related to one of the “traits or characteristics” listed in the section above, please complete the formal complaint form in writing and take directly to your school building’s administrator or to the district office located at 110 East Park Road, Wheatland, IA 52777.
